1908年， 蒙德里安接触到 theosophical movement 即神智学运动，就是一帮人聚在一起专门研究心理、精神、超能力、通灵、接神等等，探讨人和世界、自己的关系。艺术家开始了多层面的哲学性的思考，从绘画作品中也可以感受到一些宗教意味的图像。

这幅《夜：红色的树》中蒙德里安几乎只使用了红黄蓝三种色彩，虽然只是不完全抽象作品，但这似乎代表着蒙德里安画风向着后来的风格派运动所转变。
