专访第十八届上海国际葡萄酒品评赛评委,葡萄酒大师Jane Skilton MW
第十八届上海国际葡萄酒品评赛(以下简称SIWC)于2024年6月17-21日在上海成功举办。作为SIWC特邀媒体,我们采访到了本届重量级评委,葡萄酒大师Jane Skilton MW。

Jane Skilton MW在伦敦开始了她的葡萄酒生涯,1988年获得了WSET文凭,并获得了干邑学院和Frescobaldi奖学金。她于1993年成为葡萄酒大师,2006年,她创立了葡萄酒教育公司,新西兰葡萄酒与烈酒学院,为从业者和消费者提供WSET资格证书。该校教授所有WSET级别的课程,是新西兰唯一一所授权教授4级文凭的学校。她是2023年新西兰食品和葡萄酒领域最具影响力的50位女性之一,作为一名演讲者和公认的领军人物,她在葡萄酒领域指导其他女性。她是《勃艮第内幕》的新西兰撰稿人,《独立葡萄酒月刊》的联合编辑,并为新西兰和海外的多家葡萄酒出版物撰稿。

1.First of all, please introduce yourself.

My name is Jane Skilton, and I'm originally from England, but I've lived in New Zealand for the last 25 years. I've been a Master of Wine for 30 years, and I've never done anything else—I've always had a job in wine.

2.So far, what about the quality of the wine samples in this competition? Are there any wines that impressed you?

The competition is very well run, but I think some of the wines may have looked a little bit old because, you know, obviously the last four or five years have been very difficult trading. We've had some really lovely, bright, fresh, juicy red wines that have been a highlight. There have been some quite nice white wines too—Chardonnay, some Sauvignon Blanc that looks good as well. So, there have been some really good parts, but there are some wines which are maybe a little old.

Yeah, I think tomorrow we're doing the trophies, and I've got some more judging this afternoon, but hopefully we'll find some more good wines.

4.This is your first time to be the judge of SIWC, so what do you think of this competition?

It's super well run. So, I've done lots of other competitions in China—this is probably my 10th wine competition—but this is really, really well organized. So, it's kind of much, it makes my job much easier if the wines are in the right order, if the glasses, the people in the back, team, super well organized. So, you know, it makes it much easier, much nicer.
这个比赛组织得非常好。我在中国参加过很多其他的比赛,这可能是我第十次参加葡萄酒比赛,但这个比赛真的非常、非常有条理。所以,这让我的工作变得更加轻松,如果葡萄酒摆放有序,杯子、后台团队都非常有条理。你知道的,这使得一切都变得更加轻松、更加愉快。

5.What change have you observed in the wine market in China this time?

China and we have a strong relationship with it, so I'm hoping if I get to go and look around some wine shops and see some more New Zealand wine. I haven't, sorry, I haven't had a chance to have a look yet.

I have a plan because I'm staying on for a few days after the competition and go and have a look around. So yeah, I just kind of have a look.

Exactly because none of us have traveled, have we, for the last three or four years? So yes, first trip.

8.As a professional wine judge, in your opinion, what are the most important skills that a judge needs to have?

Oh, okay. So you need to be open-minded. It's a team; you're sitting on a panel with other people, other wine professionals, and each of them has their own skills. So judging wine is only part of it. You have to listen to other people—they might have a different opinion than you. At the end of the day, you have to get a result that works for everybody. So part of the process is to make sure that everyone is heard. You know, you have to listen to everyone else, you have to listen to the trainee judges. I've got some really good wines on my panel yesterday and today. It's a collaborative process, it's not a single person judging. So I think you have to be open-minded and not try and decide what you think the wines are. There are some grape varieties I don't like, but when I judge, I have to put my personal opinion aside and just treat every wine equally.

9.In the competition, it takes a short time for the judge to taste a wine, but as we all know, some wines need time to pre-open. So how do you ensure fairness in judging the quality of the wines?

Oh, that's a very hard question. I think most people buy wine, open it, and drink it. There are only a very small number of wines that you need to keep in cellar—a really small amount—and maybe they are not the ones that get entered into wine competitions. Wines that get entered into competitions are really delicious bottles of wine. Most consumers will buy them, take them home, and open them. So we wouldn't necessarily say, you know, you might say, "Oh, you need to decant the wine or prepare it," but that's not very fair. Every wine has to be good when it's opened. Sorry, you can't be favoring some things over other things. So no, you just open them and taste them.
